Black Soil: A Short Story

by Anastasiia Zhuravlova, 2021

Anastasiia ZhuravlovaI started this piece a while ago, but the words refused to form. It laid untouched for more than two years; I lacked inspiration, or so I liked to think. In reality, though, I lacked the courage to step into the shoes of...

Beyond Russia: Broader History Contextualizes Role of Russian and Soviet Empires

by Shawn Conroy, HUSI 2021

Shawn ConroyDr. Serhiy Bilenky’s course Tradition and Modernity in Ukraine and HUSI’s Friday speakers have enriched my understanding of Ukrainian history, partlicularly the different roles that Ukraine has played in the visions of other powers and how those visions have continued to inform developments in Ukraine in the present. As a PhD student in Russian imperial and Soviet history, my course load has focused on events as they unfolded within the territorial bounds of those two powers.... Ukrainian Language Opens Paths for Opera Studies

by César Moreno, HUSI 2021

Cesar Moreno ZayasI took the course “Ukrainian for Reading Knowledge” at the Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute to explore and develop a deep insight into the Ukrainian language. My aims have been fulfilled. The course has a wide spectrum of classmates from different academic backgrounds, with their own academic and personal story that motivates them to explore the Ukrainian language. The diversity of the group, as well as the instruction, allowed me to face different angles of Ukraine, learn a lot of new vocabulary, and take a real inside look at different texts.... The typical experience of many students was visiting their grandparents. Following this tradition, my family and I almost every summer went to Kivertsi, a small town near Lutsk, where my grandparents live.... Read more about "HUSI – A Summer Experience Like No Other"

"Why Should Ukrainian Students Participate in HUSI?"

by Olha Stasiuk

Olha StasiukIt was a rainy day in July 2020. After the first lecture by Professor Serhii Bilenky (an online lecture, unfortunately, because of COVID-19), my classmates and I stayed in the Zoom meeting a bit longer. We wanted to learn something new about each other and share our reflections about the first lecture. There were people from different countries, of different ages; they had diverse backgrounds and experiences. Some of them (including myself) were Ukrainian graduates or postgraduates. Suddenly, the question popped up: Why do Ukrainian students join HUSI if they studied Ukrainian history and literature before? Why cross the ocean (even virtually) for seven weeks to explore your own country?... Read more about "Why Should Ukrainian Students Participate in HUSI?"
