Abstract

The discordant nature of Ukrainian nationalist groups between the World Wars was not limited to the schism of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) in 1938. A multitude of competing factions, each prone to internal rifts, clashed on fundamental issues, from the nation’s history and geopolitical orientation, to gender, religion, and literature. Trevor Erlacher’s lecture will examine the bitter polemics between Dmytro Dontsov, his followers at (and defectors from) the journal Vistnyk (Herald), rival literary circles and publications, Viacheslav Lypyns’kyi and the Hetmanites, the leadership of the OUN, and other Ukrainian nationalist organizations in interwar East Central Europe. Internecine feuds impeded the formation of a unified Ukrainian nationalist movement, but this strife also fostered a milieu of vigorous debates, intellectual dynamism, and cultural innovation. This lecture will be followed by a discussion and Q&A with Olesya Khromeychuk and Oleksandr Zaitsev. Trevor Erlacher’s book, Ukrainian Nationalism in the Age of Extremes: An Intellectual Biography of Dmytro Dontsov is currently available for preorder on Amazon.
