Andrey Kurkov, a prolific contemporary Ukrainian writer, is best known for Death and the Penguin, published in English translation in 2001 (the original was published in Russian in 1996). His most recent novel, Grey Bees, is about a beekeeper navigating daily life in the “grey zone” between the active conflict and Ukrainian territory.
This event will feature a discussion of how Kurkov balances writing about contemporary Ukraine and Ukrainians with his creative, sometimes even fantastical, scenarios and characters. It serves as both the culmination of this summer's TCUP Book Club and the final event of the HUSI Public Event Series.
