In 2014 Ukrainian Society celebrated the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of the National Poet, Taras Shevchenko, which coincided with the revolution on the Maidan and did not go according to the plans laid by the Yanukovych team. Five years later, in 2019, came the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of Panteleimon Kulish, friend, first exegete and occasionally caustic critic of Shevchenko, and after him, the single most influential architect of the Ukrainian revival of the 19th century (and among other things also the first translator of the Bible into Ukrainian). While these anniversaries occasioned many celebratory events there was also a scholarly component reflected perhaps most intensely in the publishing activities of Krytytka and the Shevchenko and Kulish publishing projects supported by the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the US and HURI. The lecture by George G. Grabowicz will focus on an overview of the two dozen or so publications on Shevchenko and Kulish that appeared after 2005 (when the Kulish project was initiated) and the major historiographic and source studies challenges they encountered.

George G. Grabowicz is the Dmytro Čyževs’kyj Professor of Ukrainian Literature in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Harvard University. He received his B.A. from Yale University (1965) and his PhD in comparative literature from Harvard (1975), where he was also Junior Fellow in the Society of Fellows (1971-1974).

Professor Grabowicz has been Chairman of the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Harvard (1983-1988) and Director of Harvard's Ukrainian Research Institute (1989-1996). He was one of the founders and President (1991-1993) of the International Association for Ukrainian Studies and Chairman of the American Committee of Slavists (1983-1988). He is a member of the Executive Committees of the Ukrainian Research Institute and the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard. Since 2012 he is President of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the US. Since 2015 he also heads the Shevchenko Institute of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences in the US.

The Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute hosts weekly lectures on Fridays at 1:15pm EDT. The general public is invited to attend on YouTube and use the chat function to ask questions of the speaker, which will be addressed as time permits. Current HUSI students will join the speaker on Zoom. We particularly hope our HUSI alumni "attend" on YouTube and enjoy once more the HUSI experience!
