tcup book club logoWe are pleased to announce that the third TCUP Book Club will feature Dr. Jennifer J. Carroll's book Narkomania: Drugs, HIV, and Citizenship in Ukraine. Carroll is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Elon University. She is a medical anthropologist, research scientist, and subject matter expert on substance use and public health interventions to prevent overdose. Narkomania was published by Cornell University Press in 2019.

From the back cover: "Carroll uses her findings to explore what people who use drugs can teach us about the contemporary societies emerging in post-Soviet space." The book explores how drug use is linked to "good" citizenship in contemporary Ukraine, and it ties in pre- and post-Euromaidan politics to public health.

Narkomania coverTCUP will provide a guided reading for Book Club participants through the month of October, including weekly emails featuring participant tweets and questions, as well as discussion points and key themes. Participants will also be invited to an online screening and discussion of the film Balka: Women, HIV, and Drug Use in Ukraine (date to be confirmed). Carroll will join HURI for two events: she will give a Seminar in Ukrainian Studies on Wednesday, October 28 about current healthcare reforms in Ukraine, and on Thursday, October 29, Carroll will join Book Club members on Zoom for an author Q&A.

Readers can buy the book directly from Cornell University Press. When you register to participate, you will automatically be sent a 30% discount code from the Press.
