The Chronicle of Samiilo Velychko: Toward a New Academic Edition

by Tatiana Tairova-Yakovleva
Vol. 38, No. 3–4

The chronicle of Samiilo Velychko is one of the most famous and significant of the so-called Cossack chronicles created in Ukraine in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The author was a military clerk (kantseliaryst) in the time of Ivan Mazepa. Velychko was the first Ukrainian author who not only described events using various sources, including materials from the General Chancellery, but also attempted to create his own vision of the history of the “Cossack-Rusian people” (козакоруского народа). This was especially important after Poltava, when Ukrainian autonomy was declining and the search for a national identity was crucial.
